How hot is too hot for a video card?

My newly purchased Radeon 4870X2 on idle is running at 83-84 degrees celcius. This temperature is around the middle of the heat dial on the Catalyst Control Centre.

And i just had a game blue screen on me. Could too much heat be the reason?

How hot is a video card supposed to run when its idling?|||Idling should be around 40-50c depending on the card, mine idles at 60.

i'd recommend taking out the card carefully and cleaning it, making sure all connectors are in and there is proper air flow for the fan and vent ( like most newer models. )

Most cards can work under 160c max, so 140 is the throttle and BSOD, and getting to 140c isn't that good, better double check everything to be safe.|||There is something seriously wrong because 80 degrees Celsius is reeeally hot for anything inside a computer. REALLY hot. Like failure kind of hot. |||just now checked the load rating in specs it is 250W just imagine it will be too hot to touch and place a fan right on its heat sink to keep it cooler
